“My therapist advised me to rename and reframe my family for my sanity and peace of mind. Referring to her family, Mariah said, “My mother became Pat to me, Morgan my ex-brother and Alison my ex-sister.” “I had to stop hoping for them to one day magically become the mommy, big brother, and big sister I fantasized about.”

She said, “I had to stop making myself available to be hurt by them,” noting that she had a “complicated” relationship with Patricia until her August 2024 death.

Tellingly in a statement, Mariah stated she was “blessed” to spend “the last week with my mom before she passed,” despite their ups and downs. “I appreciate everyone’s love, support, and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Before the couple split when Mariah was only three years old in 1973, Mariah’s father, Alfred, received three children with his wife Patricia. As a child, Mariah saw her father on weekends; but, as she became a star, their visits dwindled.

Raised in New York, Alfred passed away in July 2022 from bile duct, a rare type of cancer. He turned seventy-two. Mariah had been in touch with her father, a military man from a young age, before his death. She has subsequently commemorated his legacy in her song “Sunflowers for Alfred Roy” and in October 2022 she rebuilt his vintage sports car for his birthday.

Originally a Juilliard-trained opera soprano who gave up her career to begin a family, Mariah’s mother now works as a voice instructor. August 2024 saw Patricia die at age 87.

Based on Mariah’s memoir, her connection with Patricia was “everything but simple,” throughout her life. Patricia received main custody of Mariah and her two siblings after divorcing Alfred, but things were not perfect.

Like many facets of my life, my path with my mother has been one of conflicting reality and paradoxes. It’s never been merely black-and- white; it’s a rainbow of emotions,″ Mariah said. Our connection is a prickly rope of pride, hurt, guilt, thanks, jealousy, respect, and disappointment. A difficult affection ties my heart to that of my mother.

Mariah remarked in August 2024, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend,” notwithstanding their differences, in a statement following her death.
Of Mariah’s siblings, Alison Carey was the oldest. In August 2024 Alison passed away on the same day as Patricia, the mother of Alison and Mariah. She was sixty-seven. ” Sadly, in a terrible turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” Mariah said in a statement thereby verifying Alison’s death.

Mariah said of her connection with Alison that it was tense before her passing. Mariah noted of her siblings in her 2020 book: “I have no doubt it is emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact with my ex-brother and ex-sister.” Later, Alison sued Mariah for supposedly causing “emotional distress” with her tell-all. In Touch claims that the issue remained unsettled until Alison passed away.

Of Alfred and Patricia, Morgan is the only son. Many of the problems in Mariah’s relationship with Morgan were highlighted in her 2020 memoir. Apart from narrating a claimed physical altercation between Morgan and her father in the book, Mariah claimed that Morgan tried to extort her for money once she gained popularity.

“Her attempt to falsely characterize plaintiff as equally violent as their father, and her subsequent commentary on police relations with Black people was only the beginning of defendant Mariah Carey’s desperate attempt to vilify plaintiff, play the victim card and curry favor with the Black Lives Matter movement, said Morgan’s legal team in a defamation lawsuit filed in March 2021.”

Page Six says, “The story of Ms. Carey’s rise from a dysfunctional and sometimes violent family environment has significant public value, particularly to any young person who may find her/himself stuck in similarly harsh and dispiriting circumstances and who can benefit from the inspiration to employ their talents in pursuit of their dreams.”

Fourteen of the sixteen defamation lawsuit accusations against Mariah were dropped by a judge in February 2022 Morgan can sue Mariah for sections in her book suggesting he delivered cocaine to “the beautiful people,” and claimed he might have been “in-the-system,” or prison for a severe crime, Justice Barbara Jaffee of the state Supreme Court in Manhattan stated Reuters reported. October 2023 saw the lawsuit still in progress.
